With the recent outbreak of listeriosis in Toronto, many people are searching for information about this infection. Listeriosis is caused by a bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. In humans, this infection is incredibly rare and befalls primarily newborns, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. In the animal kingdom, listeriosis is actually a pretty common occurence in domesticated and wild animals.

The easiest and simplest way to avoid contracting listeriosis is through carefully preparing and cooking your food. This is especially critical for women who are pregnant as one of the most common ways for a newborn to contract listeriosis is while in the womb.
